Euro 2024 Day 8: Oh my Ozdoyev! Own goals lead chaotic night in Germany
McTominay’s madness, more record-breaking and a dose of Dutch delight
By Newsroom Sport 20 June 2024
Scotland defender Scott McTominay scored the most bizarre own goal of Euro 2024 to date as the Scots scraped a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic to reach the knockout stages of the tournament on Wednesday.
McTominay’s howler came as Scotland were leading 2-1 late on in their Group D match against the Czechs in Gdansk, Poland. The Manchester United defender attempted to head clear a cross from the right but instead sent the ball looping over his own goalkeeper David Marshall and into the net.
The goal was the second own goal of the game, after Patrik Schick had put Scotland ahead with an own goal in the first half. Callum McGregor had equalised for Scotland before half-time, and Lyndon Dykes had given them the lead again in the second half.
The draw means that Scotland finish second in Group D behind Croatia, who beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their final group game. Scotland will now face the runners-up from Group F in the last 16.
