Burroughs was drafted by the Padres in the first round of the 1998 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2002 and played in the majors until 2007. Burroughs was a versatile infielder who could play third base, shortstop, and second base. He was also a good hitter, with a career batting average of .278.

Burroughs retired from baseball in 2007, but he made an improbable return to the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2011. He played in just 21 games that season, but he helped the Diamondbacks win the NL West division title. Burroughs retired from baseball again after the 2011 season.
